so, today has been a big day. fp and i officially have internet. we also have cable! so exciting. i haven't had cable in probably 13 years. anyway, i'm most excited about cable because we can watch election results tonight on a channel that comes in! no scribble. yeah! seriously so exciting. also, we went to vote this morning with no problem. there was no wait. well, i had to wait for fp but that was it. there was only one voting booth for our district. so luckily when we went, no one was there. also, there was a bake sale in the polling place. i bought two peanut butter cookies.
i have to say i'm so use to voting in chicago. i can't remember the last time i didn't just draw the connect-an-arrow thing. anyway, the voting booth looked like it was from, i don't know, 1930? it was this huge metal thing. i got to close a curtain behind me. when i got in there, i had to pull this giant red lever to the right, then flick a bunch of black switches next to who i was voting for, then pull the giant red lever back to the left and i was done. i was very nervous because i wanted to make sure i did it right, even though it seemed obvious. i asked the poll person and i read the instructions inside like five times. i am happy though that it seemed like the kind of booth that produced a physical result of some sort.
hi lj! i've missed you. i've been pretty self-absorbed and not in the posting way. anyway, i feel like i'm starting to shake it off. here are some things i've been up to:
1. this giant hawk was outside of my window the other day. weird.
2. since i haven't been working as regularly as i have been in the past, i've been spending a lot of time at the post office. the one i go to on california seems to particularly suck. there's always a long line. anyway, today was a particularly crazy day. there was this older lady that was at the front of this long line and she had a cane. this younger woman in a wheelchair pulled up next to her. the old lady looked at her and started hitting her wheelchair with her cane and saying the line starts back there and she points to the end of the line. before the woman in the wheelchair could say anything the woman behind the older woman in line said "they usually let the handicapped skip the line that's why she's up there." the old lady seemed pissed and then she said, "well, i'm just thinking we all have to stand and she gets to sit there."
3. i'm enjoying the warm weather and not staring at a wall in a dark room.
one of the few guys that i like at work is in a band and they're covering this song for their halloween show. i totally forgot about this song/video but it made me laugh. especially all of the cameos.
Woah. I just got like the wierdest prank call/collecting call or something. My cell phone rang and it was a number I didn't recognize but I picked it up. The person on the other end said what do you think we're all the same? Do you think we all make tamales? And, so I said I think you have the wrong number and hung up. Then they same number calls right back. So, I don't pick up. They leave a voicemail. I listen to it and it's the same guy, only this time he sounds all professional and says his name is Jose with the Advanced Medical Group or whatever and then gave a reference number to call back with. And I do owe this group some money for a bill. I don't know. It seems kind of strange.
THERE WAS SOMETHING VERY LARGE AND ALIVE IN MY SALAD!!!! AND I DIDN'T DISCOVER IT UNTIL AFTER I HAD EATEN HALF THE SALAD!!! I AM EXTREMELY FREAKED OUT RIGHT NOW!!!!
It's like 86˚ in my office right now and it keeps going up. Something is wrong with the air conditioner. I'm sweating at my chair and I want to take a nap so bad.
I got this at the Boring Store on Milwaukee, which is really this super awesome spy store! Not only is it a spy store, which is so much fun, but also all of the profits go to an after school tutoring/writing program for kids. http://www.826chi.org/
I went in there with turtle and louche and it was just the coolest place. Check it out if haven't already. I'm often the last to find a "new" place.
I hate today. I'm not talking to today. I had to work late last night. Only until midnight but I'm tired. The only good thing is I discovered we have guitar hero at work. Yeah. I might go play over lunch. Oh, and it was a nice bike ride home down Milwaukee because no one was out. Well, no one except a couple of drunk people in the six way who I had to dodge as they were trying to cross in front of me.
I was just reading a blog that was talking about how record stores use to have midnight release parties for a new album. They pretty much stopped because of downloading online. But, I guess some stores are starting to have them again. Anyway, this brought back a crazy memory to me of when I worked in a record store in college and we had midnight release parties. I specifically remember the release of Pearl Jam’s vs. It was crazy. There were so many people waiting outside to get in. They were all pushed up against the windows and I was scared. I was also drunk because some co-workers and I decided it would be fun to go out for drinks in between closing the store at ten and coming back at midnight to open it up again. It was during this experience that I realized that it is not a good idea to go to work drunk. Anyway, at midnight we opened the doors and so many people at one time were trying to smush in the door that they push at least one person right through the front store window. We had to call an ambulance because the person had a big piece of glass in their ass. I was working the register and trying very hard to concentrate on the simple task of ringing up the sales. I was so glad when it was over.
